Originally featured as a gallery blog post in Boulder, CO, this reflection on the profound connection between art, emotion, and humanity explores the unique role of a life drawing model.
When I think of humanity from an emotional standpoint, I’m struck by the powerful words that come to mind: energy, healing, repair, empathy, tolerance, compassion, kindness, acceptance, patience, generosity, love, gratitude, consciousness, judgment, opinions, beliefs. Each word represents a thread that binds us together, and as a model, I get to contribute to this blend of human experience.
My role as an art specialist, or fine art model takes me to several college campuses, galleries, open studios, and zooms where I facilitate this connection through the medium of art. I stand or sit still for anywhere from 30 seconds to 45 minutes, sometimes even for up to 10 hours in a day. Yes, I get breaks. Yes, I can scratch an itch. And yes, when nature calls I even model on my period. However, in these moments of stillness, I’m not just a figure on a canvas; I’m a backup dancer to the creative process. Each pose invites the artists and students to interpret, connect, and express themselves. It’s fascinating to see how my body, in its vulnerability and strength, can evoke different emotions and ideas. There’s a certain magic where energy flows freely, allowing both artists and models to heal and grow through the process.
Life drawing is more than just an artistic practice; it’s a form of communication. Each stroke of the pencil or brush captures not only my form but also the shared human experience…an exploration of beauty, imperfection, and connection. It’s a reminder that art is not just created in isolation; it’s born from the synergy between the artist and the subject. Each pose I strike is an invitation for others to interpret and express their creativity, creating a shared experience that’s deeply rewarding. I see it as a beautiful dance of vulnerability and strength, where we all grow and heal together.
As a late 20-something author and model, I pour my heart into both my written works (Viva La Yves) and my captivating poses. My journey has been shaped by incredible friends and inspiring moments, and I hope to reflect that positive energy back into the world. I want to be a role model who embodies kindness and determination, showing that pursuing your passions can truly inspire those around you.
So, I ask you: Do your hobbies or job allow you to create? Do they foster connection and inspire you to explore the depths of your humanity? As I navigate this journey as a life drawing model, I’m continually reminded of the profound impact we can have on each other through our creative expressions. In the end, it’s all about connection…through art, through emotion, and through our shared humanity. Let’s embrace it and continue to create together.
